Serving our neighbors with generosity and love

Good Neighbors Brooklyn helps run and support programs throughout Kings County aimed at serving our most at-risk populations: immigrants, refugees, single mothers, people experiencing homelessness or food scarcity, and the oppressed. We would love your partnership — get involved!

English Class

GNC hosts a casual English conversation nights every Monday evening at Roots Cafe in South Slope. Immigrants, refugees, and other learners mix with our volunteers and get a chance to practice learning English and building community.

Volunteers always welcome!

Mentorship

A woman smiling, holding a black and white dog with a yellow collar. A man standing next to them holding a can of beer, both in a doorway.

One of the most impactful way to serve our neighbors is to help them stay our neighbors, through relational, emotional, spiritual, and legal support.

Mentorship is a program through which Good Neighbors volunteers can sponsor at-risk immigrant youths, creating opportunities for them to navigate the naturalization process via family court instead of more hostile immigration courts.

Anyone can become a Mentor, and the need is greater than ever.

Good Neighbors partners with the CHIPs Soup Kitchen on Fourth Avenue, and are always looking for volunteers for both one-time and recurring service opportunities.

The Frances Residence

People gathered in a cozy, art-filled restaurant or cafe, with some smiling and socializing. Four women are in the foreground, hugging or standing closely, with a lively crowd in the background.

The Frances Residence is a private temporary residence program for mothers and their infants and toddlers in need of shelter and support services.

Join In: Spend time connecting with single mothers over shared meals and conversation. Offer support through childcare and help with other day-to-day needs.

Safe Families

Safe Families is a volunteer-driven ministry with the goal of keeping kids safe and families intact. A longterm partner organization, Safe Families organizes vetted and trained volunteers from local churches to offer individualized support for families in crisis.

Good Neighbors partners with Safe Families to empower, encourage, and strengthen families through mutually beneficial relationships. We seek to reduce foster care numbers by supporting families as we know that stress and isolation can lead to abuse and neglect.

Mixtexa

Mixteca is a community-based organization in Sunset Park. It exists to address critical needs in health, education, social and legal issues facing the burgeoning Mexican and Latin American immigrant community in Brooklyn.

Good Neighbors partners with Mixteca every year to collect backpacks and school supplies for needy families to help make back-to-school an exciting and joyful season. We also host an annual Thanksgiving dinner for Mixteca families.

Vocal NY

A black man wearing glasses and a hat, passionately protesting at a rally surrounded by women holding signs about overdose prevention, with tall buildings and a digital pedestrian signal in the background.

Voices of Community Activists and Leaders (VOCAL-NY) is a statewide grassroots membership organization that builds power among low-income people directly impacted by HIV/AIDS, the drug war, mass incarceration, and homelessness.

We accomplish this through community organizing, leadership development, advocacy, direct services, and direct action.

Good Neighbors partners with Vocal by hosting community dinners.

Running Rights & Land

Ten men in athletic clothing, some giving thumbs up and others making peace signs, standing in the park on a rainy day surrounded by trees.

Good Neighbors partners with Touching Land to host a running club this fall with members of the community and asylum seekers. The club meets weekly and participants are educated on the rights of undocumented persons. The final week the group participates in a race together.

Sleep out

Multiple people lying on the floor, covered with sleeping bags and blankets, in a large indoor space, possibly an airport or shelter.

Good Neighbors partners with Covenant House to provide shelter, resources, and long term help to young people experiencing homelessness. Every year, we organize a Sleep Out: an event where people give up their beds for a night to raise money and awareness for teenagers experiencing homelessness in our City.

This event is open to students in middle and high school.
